That is so beautiful, Emily. The wild ice and also your reverence for the dead creatures along the path.

I am curious: what are the precautions for skating on the lakes up north? (I guess I would be afraid to either freeze or fall to death)

That is a great question. During "wild ice season", there is a lot of communication in the community about ice conditions on different lakes but also an awareness that things can change overnight, so every person is responsible for checking the ice themselves before skating. We check ice thickness often, wear picks around our necks and life jackets and throw ropes in case of breaking through. There is a phrase "no ice is safe ice" no matter how thick it is, so there is an awareness that this beautiful experience comes with risk of falling through. It's up to each person to decide what they're comfortable with :)
